Step 1 — Understand the Board Layout A Freecell game has three key areas: Tableau — 8 columns of face-up cards in the center. The first four columns hold 7 cards each; the last four hold 6 cards each. Every card is visible from the start. Free Cells — 4 empty spaces in the top-left corner. Each can hold one card at a time and act as temporary storage to help you rearrange the tableau. Foundation Piles — 4 empty piles in the top-right corner, one per suit (Hearts, Diamonds, Clubs, Spades). This is where you build your winning sequences. Step 2 — Know the Goal Move all 52 cards to the four Foundation piles. Each Foundation must be built by suit in ascending order — starting with the Ace and ending with the King (A → 2 → 3 → … → Q → K). Complete all four foundations and you win. Step 3 — Move Cards on the Tableau You can move the top card of any tableau column onto another column, as long as the card you're placing it on is one rank higher and the opposite color. For example, a red 6 can be placed on a black 7. Building these alternating-color, descending sequences is how you uncover and free up the cards you need. Step 4 — Use the Free Cells Wisely Click any exposed top card and move it to a free cell to temporarily park it out of the way. This creates breathing room to rearrange the tableau beneath it. You can move that card from the free cell back to the tableau or directly to a foundation pile when the right spot opens up. Remember — each free cell holds only one card at a time, so use them sparingly. Step 5 — Send Cards to the Foundation As soon as an Ace is exposed anywhere on the tableau or sitting in a free cell, move it to a Foundation pile. Then build on it in order by suit. You can double-click an eligible card to send it to the correct foundation automatically. Step 6 — Choose Your Difficulty Freecell on VPlay offers multiple difficulty levels. Easier levels deal more manageable card arrangements; harder levels create tighter, more complex boards that demand deeper planning from the very first move.
