5 Tips to Get Better at Puzzle Games (Without Looking Up Walkthroughs)

I'll be honest — I used to be the worst at puzzle games. I'd stare at the screen for 20 minutes, finally give up, look up a walkthrough, and kick myself when the solution was right there in front of me.

After way too many hours playing browser puzzle games (Happy Glass, Cut the Rope clones, those "draw a line to save the guy" things), I figured out a few tricks that actually work. None of them involve spoilers, and none of them require you to watch a 10-minute YouTube video.

1. Step away for 2 minutes

This sounds stupidly simple, and it is — but it works every single time. When you're stuck, close the tab, grab a drink, or just stare out the window for two minutes. Your brain keeps working on the problem in the background. I can't tell you how many times I've walked away from a level and the solution just clicked the second I came back.

The worst thing you can do is keep poking at the screen trying random things. That just builds frustration and you start overthinking.

2. Flip the problem around

Instead of asking "how do I get from start to finish?", ask "what needs to happen at the end to win?" and work backwards.

This one saved me on so many water-drawing puzzles. I'd spend 10 minutes trying to figure out where to start drawing, then I'd look at where the water needs to end up and the path would just make sense. Most puzzle games are designed so the end state gives you way more information than the start.

3. Notice what the game doesn't let you do

Every puzzle has rules you figure out by accident. Can't draw on that surface? That's probably important. Can't move that block past a certain point? That's not a bug — that's the puzzle.

I once spent an entire evening stuck on a level in one of those "draw to protect" games, only to realize I'd been trying to draw over a zone the game was explicitly telling me not to touch. Read the room (or, y'know, the level).

4. Do the obvious thing first

Seriously. Just try it. I know it feels like it can't be that easy, but half the time the solution is the first thing you thought of and then dismissed because it seemed too simple.

Game designers actually do this on purpose. They expect you to overthink it. The first level where you're sure there's a trick? There isn't a trick. Just press the button.

5. If you're really stuck, replay an earlier level

This one feels counterintuitive — you're stuck on level 47, why would you go back to level 12? But here's the thing: puzzle games teach you mechanics gradually. If you're stuck, it's usually because you forgot a trick the game taught you 20 levels ago and hasn't reminded you about.

I've lost count of how many times replaying a few easy levels suddenly made the hard one click. It's like stretching before a run — you're loosening up the part of your brain that solves these things.

At the end of the day, puzzle games are supposed to be fun. If you're not enjoying it, walk away. There's no prize for beating it on your first try. (Okay, maybe there is — the crowns on VPlay actually add up. But still.)
